KULT DOMINI, finding inspiration in the deep ocean

Kult Domini is an innovative contemporary high-end footwear brand produced under the creative direction of London-based designer Kate Deeley. I met Kate at the last London Fashion Week SS14 and she explained that she handcrafts each pair of shoes. In her last collection —Syreni —, Kate rebels against stereotypes and explores textures and forms paying homage to the sea.

Domini finds inspiration in the deep ocean and plays with stacked wooden heels, leathers and colour to build a collection where greens, pinks and cotta beiges are mixed, reminding us of the reflections of the sea.

What do you see as the ultimate discovery in human history?

The universe and our solar system. I can never get my head around the size of the universe, that it is infinite! How the planets interact with each other, the observation that they are all so beautifully spherical and suspended… blows my mind and makes me think how everything on this Earth is in fact carefully contemplated and deliberately connected.

Do you find creativity where there was once insanity?

Yes, I find creativity when there is a certain level of personal insanity.

If you would have to give up one of your five senses, which one would it be and why?

Smell.

Art and music are therapy.

Sex = touch.

I live to eat.

But I survive okay with a cold.

Empathy and apathy… Would you be able to work with someone like yourself?

I am definitely not apathetic. I like to think I am empathetic. However, I am very annoying in lots of other ways so no, probably not.

How do you cope with creative desperation?

Try and remember that desperation is only a momentary lapse.

And one for the ride, when do you decide that enough is enough?

After (at least a small bit of) consideration and never on a whim. Although I need to listen to my own advice I think.
