IKLECTIK, the self-funded creative platform founded in 2014 in South London that showcases contemporary art, experimental music and artistic critical practice, presents the Otherness festival. On May 21 and 29, people at IKLECTIK will bring together panel discussions, A/V performances and screenings to collide and abstract multiple conceptual ideas and social debates around the topic of Otherness in a peri-pandemic context.
The excessive use of relational digital tools has created a new dystopian mental state that radically changes how we understand the self and perceive the other—examining locations that provide a ground for discourse around the ancient, other realities, technology, nature, one-and-other and time through sonic rituals and technology acting as portals to eerie landscapes now lost to humankind.
With this in mind, the Otherness festival aims to collide multiple conceptual and social debates around the remix/cut/ mash-up culture, such as a distortion of reality through mass media, a blurring of fact and fiction, secret societies of the digital age, a lost sense of time and interlocated collaboration.
Utilising indoor and outdoor spaces at IKLECTIK, Otherness will bring together Roly Porter + Endless Prowl, Marija Bozinovska Jones, Joey Holder, ecolagbohrsac2021, Jung An Tagen + Rainer Kohlberger and Ziúr among many others.
Some of our highlights are Selachimorpha & Semelparous by Joey Holder, which revolves around Holder’s newest video work, situated within a complex physical structure; the eel is depicted as a mythological symbol, biological specimen, and its most controversial role: food.
Beginningless Mind by Marija Bozinovska Jones, a three-fold audio-visual narrative that interacted in real-time with search engines using natural language processing to decipher today’s ordering of knowledge and Emergence Collapse by Jung An Tagen + Rainer Kohlberger, a show was developed from Jung An Tagen’s latest album, Emergent Properties, the first release on ETAT, the producer’s new netlabel which focuses on dissociative, psychoacoustic, computer music.
Otherness festival runs May 21 and 29, 2022. Find tickets here.
