Performance: ULTIMATE EMOJI, Albert Barqué-Duran

Text by CLOT Magazine

ULTIMATE EMOJI is one of the ten selected design prototypes to be presented at the Disseny Hub Barcelona for the 2019 Mobile World Congress. The project takes the form of a large-scale sculpted emoji, produced by 3D printing, artificial intelligence and painted at a live show as part of a performance.

ULTIMATE EMOJI
 is a product of
Dr Barqué-Duran’s eagerness to analyse this digitalisation of contemporary society,  using innovative technology and scientific research. The installation reflects on how ideograms used in electronic messages and web services are shaping our current culture of communication and digital self-expression.
The various features of ULTIMATE EMOJI are influenced by the audience’s perception and their responses to their urban surroundings, Disseny Hub Barcelona. Accompanying the sculpture, ambient music generated through a conjunction of sounds sourced from internet ‘memes’ plays.

We had the opportunity to interview Albert Barqué-Duran here at CLOT Magazine last year, in regards to his project ‘The Zero Gravity Band’; an immersive installation that questions how gravitational laws have conditioned the development of art and music as we know them.
