Temes de Disseny, the yearly publication of ELISAVA Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, is back with an issue focused on AI and emerging digital technologies as design material for the year 2019. Temes de disseny is a publication that aims to stimulate and foster reflection and debate among students, researchers, thinkers, and professionals working around the design culture.
As Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, and other technologies become widespread, they could be seen as new materials for design. But what are the special traits of these materials? How should design incorporate them into its practices? How does it change design research? HCI? UX? What are their ethical implications?
In this issue of Temes de Disseny, directing editors Dr Oscar Tomico and Dr Laura Clèries gathered contributions from design researchers and practitioners that offer potential answers. From practical approximations to ethical guidelines, the authors in this issue cover broad ground in their quest to answer these new artificial agencies’ challenges. Guest editors Ramon Sangüesa and Ariel Guersenzvaig provide an insightful and thorough editorial introduction to the topic and the selected articles.
In the coming weeks, CLOT Magazine will republish some of the original articles that Temes de Disseny and the authors have kindly shared and rewritten for our audiences.
On a further note, the 36th issue is already in the making. Temes de Disseny #36 will focus on Design Futures Now: Literacies and Making and will address a mix of topics concerning how to design literacies and design-making may be understood as ‘future-facing’, conveying the ways design practice and education may be positioned to work prospectively ahead of the current concerns on environmental, social and ethical challenges.
