PACE Gallery has launched an online series that presents one-on-one conversations between artists, curators, writers, and leading thinkers of today, broadcast weekly on their Instagram Live. The second episode of this weekly live conversation series will feature PACE artist Trevor Paglen in conversation with Kate Crawford tomorrow Thursday, 9 at 5 pm EDT.
This series is on hand to ask the questions that keep us awake at night, but also attempt to answer them, delivering live broadcasts and curious, engaged, and informed thinking from our house to yours, people at PACE Gallery say.
Trevor Paglen’s artistic practise spans image-making, sculpture, investigative journalism, writing, and engineering. He is known for investigating the invisible through the visible and revealing the hidden in series such as The Black Sites, The Other Night Sky, and Limit Telephotography. In other series like Symbology and Code Names, he utilises text, video, object, and image to explore questions surrounding military culture and language.
Paglen collaborated with Kate Crawford in 2019 to stage the first major exhibition of training data images in AI systems, held at the Fondazione Prada Museum in Milan and followed with the Making Faces exhibition in Paris in 2020, which addressed the history of facial recognition and takes a critical look at current surveillance and policing systems, tracing back to the 19th century.
Kate Crawford is a Distinguished Research Professor at NYU, where she co-founded the AI Now Institute. She is also a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research New York and is the inaugural Visiting Chair in AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.
