Submerge is a Manchester-based producing organisation and international festival of innovative performance, music and creative technology, bringing together artists, audiences, and communities through radical live events which challenge the status quo.
They aim to work towards our vision by connecting Greater Manchester and Northern artists, audiences, and communities with queer, radical, and intersectional ideas from around the world, bringing international perspectives that can change lives, challenge xenophobia and contribute towards creating a more fair and tolerant society
Manchester is known internationally as a hotbed for innovation, experimentation and radical artistic expression; it’s the perfect new home for Submerge Festival. Says Mike Pony, Artistic Director of Submerge.
From March 8 to 27, 2022, takes place Submerge Festival, a meeting point for innovative performance, music and digital culture. This year’s theme is resistance, the practice of revealing and refusing oppressive ideas, rules and structures.
Through their work, these artists dare us to imagine a more inclusive and equitable future, redressing and refusing heteronormativity, patriarchy, racism, colonialism, capitalism and environmental injustice.
With this in mind, the highlights include a series of intimate world premieres presented by Zubin Kanga, combining classical instruments with cutting-edge sensor technologies, lighting and live video: a dance double bill in Salford Lads Club on March 22 with choreography from Alessandro Sciarroni & Thick and Tight; a site-specific performance pasted onto a billboard exposing the illegal practices in our daily lives, and The Ten Commandments at the Lowry by David Hoyle on March 23. Workshops by Tammy Reynolds & Rosana Cade and Sexuality Summer School on March 26. The concurrent club night and gig programme feature genre-pushing artists, including 2 Pigs Under 1 Umbrella, Cakes Da Killa, Blood Williams and GÆRALD.
