Cluster Node x CLOT Magazine P0rtals3, ethereal avantgarde soundscapes, meditative exploration & futuristic mysticism

Text by CLOT Magazine

Cluster Node and CLOT Magazine continue to delve into experimental sonic realms through their P0RTALS series.

Following a successful launch in October 2023 and an even more successful second night in April 2024, the new portal will open on September 26th, 2024, at the Glove that Fits in East London from 7:30 pm. This time, P0rtals3 will open to ethereal avant-garde soundscapes, meditative spiritual exploration, and beat-driven futuristic mysticism.

The star lineup includes Chantal Michelle, a composer and artist based between New York City and Berlin. Her compositions gravitate from delicate piano passages to suggestive, intense electroacoustics elements and field recordings, evoking haunting perennial stasis drifting through emotional states. Earlier this year, she released ℎ−  2−   ℎ−  −  2 ℎ− (Dinzu 2024), a recording from a multichannel installation where she captures the raw, elemental nature of geological processes, conceptualised as a metaphor for the breakdown of love. Last year, one of her tracks was featured in the Cluster Node compilation ‘To Light a Candle is to Cast a Shadow’. Her live sets are primarily improvised, leaning onto heavy drones and noise.

A fascination with natural elements also underpins Ana Quirogas latest release (and debut album under her own name), Azabache (Houndstood 2023). Azabache, or jet, is a fossil mineral of vegetable origin formed in the Jurassic period—black, lightweight, warm, compact, and soft to the touch. Drawing from the rich Celtic heritage of Ana´s homeland, Asturias – the mines, minerals, and mystical feminine energy – to the urban occultism of their now-home London and the enchanting streets of Hackney and the East End, Azabache embodies the connection between deep and highly symbolic ancestral roots and these contemporary new beginnings. Ana will be performing a more beat-driven and percussive set drawing from Azabache.

Echoing the evening’s focus on spiritual and natural connections and transformative atmosphere, C. Lavender will bring her introspective and immersive soundscapes, exploring the emotional and spiritual power of sound. The New York-based interdisciplinary sound artist and sound healing practitioner explores themes of spirituality, introspection, and transformative sound in her latest album, Rupture in the Eternal Realm (iDEAL Recordings 2023). Drawing from Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice chöd, she delves into spiritual and elemental forces. Using a Buchla 200 synthesizer, gongs, and brainwave-modulating tones, she reflects on self-sacrifice and liberation. For her set, she will present a live variation of Rupture in the Eternal Realm.”

To round up the night, Estela will take control of the decks to provide a futuristic selection heavily influenced by rave culture and sci-fi worlds. A seamless extension of her other alias, CLON, where she explores the realms of new cinema and simulation.

From the visceral heart of London’s punk, noise, experimental, and DIY scenes, a unique biannual event series has emerged with force this year. Just days away from its third iteration (and the second in London), Sunday School, conceived by Dom Stevenson (aka YAWS), is set to return on August 26th at the iconic New River Studios in North London. The lineup packs a fierce array of bands and live acts featuring heavy hitters like Russell Haswell and Autumns, among many others.
