The Alcove LTD audiovisual installation transforms the Aníbal Vázquez Park (Mieres, Asturias, Spain) into a place of interaction and discovery, directly appealing to its visitors. Curated by L.E.V. (Laboratory of Visual Electronics) with the support of the Swiss Cultural Foundation Pro Helvetia is on view until 27 October.

Encor Studio was founded in 2016 by Swiss artists Mirko Eremita, David Houncheringer, Valerio Spoletini and Manuel Oberholzer. Their work documents our place in time by creating kinetic sculptures, motion design, contemporary architecture, installation art and sound visualisations.

For Alcove LTD, a recycled six-meter container was used as the canvas and object of the installation, which seeks to question the concept of isolation, reflect on the mutation of spaces, and invite us to look beyond appearances. This transparent container becomes a box of moving lights visible from all angles. The lights capture the spectators’ reflections through liquid crystal films, creating an optical and sound illusion that distorts their perception. Light tubes and white smoke invert and animate the interior in a play of reflections, blurs, contrasts, and separations to create an immersive experience that invites us to look inward and change how we observe our surroundings.

This piece is a new version of an earlier work exhibited in Taiwan in 2020. Based on the transportable nature of the container, it was reinterpreted later during its exhibition in Lyon. The work becomes nomadic and without borders, giving it a new meaning that varies depending on the space in which it is installed.
