Online event: OTHER SKIES: An Exoplanetary Festival

Text by by CLOT Magazine

CLOT Magazine is pleased to announce a new collaborative project with Multiverse Concert Series and SciArt InitiativeOTHER SKIES: an exoplanetary festival, a one-day online event taking place on 20th March 2021 that will explore our relationship with what is beyond the solar system. This day-long celebration of exoplanetary science will interweave, through an artistic lens, an online exhibition with musical performances, talks and a discussion panel from renowned artists and scientists working at the cutting edge of exoplanet research.

In 1984 astronomers observed the first planetary disk of dust and gas around the star Beta Pictoris, providing a tantalizing glimpse of the potential for exoplanet discovery. And now? Over 4,000 exoplanets have been discovered; we are fortunate to find ourselves in a fertile universe of celestial bodies, and the implications of these findings are being explored with fervour by scientists and artists alike.

Recent scientific advancements—combined with our insatiable curiosity to probe the unknown—have rekindled our SciFi imaginations in the quest for the extraterrestrial. But what are the philosophical implications of these revelations? As these discoveries permeate popular culture, artists, thinkers, and scientists reflect and interpret their relevance. Can we envision new horizons for humanity away from imperialist and colonial perspectives? What unimagined life forms will be encountered? Can we imagine what it would be like to live beneath other skies?

The exhibition space will be at the heart of this event, an immersive online environment specially created for the festival by New Art City and curated by CLOT Magazine’s editors Meritxell Rosell and Lula Criado and Julia Buntaine from SciArt Initiative.

The exhibition, Exoplanetary Dust, will feature the work of 13 international artists and collaborations and will be hosted inside the freely navigable 3D gallery.

Keeping in line with our inspirations, we have invited artists who are close to CLOT Magazine and with whom we have interacted and exchanged knowledge and ideas, including Albert Barque-Duran & Marc MarzenitAni Liu, Ed Bell, Nicole L’Huiller & Daniela Catrileo, Raphael & Jae Yeop Kim, 30drop & Stephen MclaughlinRecsund & Alien Jams, Sun Araw & Theo TriantafyllidisSónar Calling GJ273b, Richelle Gribble, Marlena Bocian-Hewitt, Lisa Messeri and Suzanne Anker.
