It is always exciting to see the launch of a new record label. Last week was the turn for re·search, the brainchild of the two minds behind Split Music, the publishing agency formed by Pete Saville and Vik Gudi. Split Music has become widely known for placing music on trailers such as ‘Blade Runner 2019‘, Mother! or the acclaimed horror movie Raw, and brand films for adidas, Dior or Puma. With a roster of experimental electronic music creators, they found the utterly weird and unusual combination of music syncing with images, running away from conventionalities.
Re·search sees the light as a new adventure for the duo. A work of dedication and a passion for artistic aesthetics. With re·search, they want to treat each of their releases as something precious and unique, bringing together artists from different disciplines. The artwork and concept lay at the centre of it alongside the music, finding grounds around a common theme for each publication.
Spheres is the first of the ‘documents’- as they call the releases-. Its inspiration comes from artist Timothy Cresswell, whose carving of spheres covered in mathematical figures—a holistic, meditative process he refers to as ‘tuning’—has taken place for over fifty years.
The art director responsible for the sleeve design of the ‘Spheres’ LP is the designer and musician (and longtime collaborator of Split Music) Daniel Cresswell, who is also Timothy’s son. Spheres feature music by These Hidden Hands, Mondkopf, OAKE, Headless Horseman, SNTS & Grebenstein, who have also taken inspiration from Timothy’s spheres. They have crafted 6 tracks of the most enjoyable experimental noise.
For the launch night, they prepared a special evening at the Dalston’s Boys Club, Absinthe cocktails and clanging sounds from Mondkopf, OAKE and These Hidden Hands combined with the quirky surroundings, made a delightful Thursday soireé. The beautifully lit spheres also complemented quite hauntingly with the room decor.
We chatted with Pete, Vik, Daniel and Timothy a few days before the launch party. A cold Monday night which we warmed with amusing stories, beers and fantastic company. There’ll be more coming soon.
