MIRA Digital Arts 2025, experimental visual art & sound: Highlights

Text by CLOT Magazine

MIRA Festival returns where sound and avant-garde culture exude. Once again, the festival transforms Fira Montjuïc into a living organism of electronic music and digital art: a playground for the senses, a laboratory for new aesthetics, and a landscape where technology and emotion find a common tune.

On November 7 and 8, with a lineup featuring 38 figures in electronic music presenting live and AV performances, DJ sets, and concerts alongside 26 digital art projects of installations, performances, virtual reality experiences, and immersive films MIRA 2025 will conquer the city.

Among the essential performances of this current edition stands the visionary Flying Lotus, founder of the influential Brainfeeder label and a leading voice of experimental electronica. With his recent EP Spirit Box (2024), he continues to explore the mystical and the cinematic, and his live show at MIRA promises a deeply Lynchian atmosphere of surrealist tension and sensory overload.

The lineup expands into electronic experimentation with Oneohtrix Point Never, on Warp Records, who will present work from his new album Tranquilizer, a conceptual piece built from reimagined 1990s sample kits, deconstructing nostalgia and digital detritus. Alongside him, Byetone, co-founder of the iconic Raster-Noton label, will offer a live performance of minimalist rigor and hypnotic pulse.

John Maus returns to the stage with his signature post-punk fervor, through darkly hypnotic synths with his haunting vocals. Marie Davidson, on DEEWEE, unveils City of Clowns, a sharp work that fuses acid spoken-word and pop structures. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, transforms the stage with Let’s Turn It Into Sound, a luminous show of modular synthesis, avant-pop, and neo-classical delicacy both ecstatic and deeply introspective.

A Visual Voyage: 26 Digital Art Proposals

For its 14th edition, MIRA 2025 presents the most extensive digital art program in its history, featuring 26 proposals that journey across the boundaries between technology, the human body, and artificial intelligence.

The installations section will challenge perception and invite reflection. Highlights include beloved duo Lolo & Sosaku’s exploration of autonomy and control through robotic dogs; Solimán López’s Earth Manifesto, a bioprinted DNA time capsule; and Nick Verstand’s algorithm-shaped light installations.

Just as striking is the collaboration Polynode Phase by Lumus Instruments, Enequist, and Maarten Vos, an immersive experience that dissolves the line between the physical and the sonic. The program also features conceptual works by Sven Sauer, a multi-award-winning filmmaker, alongside innovative projects from emerging talent at forward-thinking institutions such as IED, Elisava, and La Salle.

MIRA intensifies this visual quest with performances and live shows that interrogate the relationship between body and technology. Cognitive scientist Albert.DATA presents SYNAPTICON, a powerful live performance fusing neurohacking and artificial intelligence. Motion designer Laia Ferran makes her MIRA debut with visuals for Blawan, transforming his set into a breathtaking audiovisual experience. The festival also incorporates virtual reality and immersive experiences, including the MIRA Dome and Onionlab’s The Outcome, which encourages audiences to reflect on environmental impact and the limits of repetition.

Side Events: Experiences that Complete the Week of MIRA 2025

As is tradition, MIRA 2025 will enrich its main program with a series of side events, designed to extend the festival’s energy beyond Fira Montjuïc and into the city. These curated experiences offer deeper insight into the world of digital art and electronic music, connecting audiences with local innovators and global perspectives alike.

On Tuesday, November 4, the return of .mov brings a new session of immersive films at the IDEAL Centre d’Arts Digitals, transporting viewers into alternate realities crafted from image, sound, and imagination. Later, on Thursday, November 6, the festival will host a specialised industry talk at Libertine (Casa Bonay). Led by Georgia Taglietti and featuring key figures including Pau Cristòful (MIRA’s booker) and Ariana Díaz (communication director), this session promises valuable reflections on the evolving music and audiovisual landscape. These side events are invitations to wander between sound, vision, and thought. From immersive cinema to critical dialogue, the week breathes with discovery and connection.
