Exhibition: ‘Uncommon Natures’ at Brighton Design Festival

Text by CLOT Magazine

Uncommon Natures is an exhibition of works from the Lumen Prize for Digital Art shortlist that will bring globally recognised digital artworks to Brighton for the first time during the Brighton digital festival (13 Sept – 23 October 2018). Curated by Brighton Digital Festival director Laurence Hill to highlight the most compelling and creative explorations into digital art. The works explore both the limits and re-imagined possibilities of technologically produced art through a diverse programme of still image, 3D interactive installations, moving image, AR/VR and AI.

Laurence Hill shares: ‘Uncommon Natures is about leaky boundaries, between the human and the non-human, between the digital and the analogue, between biology and binary. Uncommon Natures is what happens when computer drawing meets the physical limitations of paper and ink, when chimps use Nietzsche to lecture humans on their arrogance and when micro-organisms read, eat and tweet books.’

Artists include Nye Thompson (Backdoor, 3D Interactive/ Installation), Cesar Baio and The League of Imaginary Scientists (Lois)(Degenerative Cultures, Artificial Intelligence), ACCI BABA (Eternal Return,  Moving Image), and Jason Rouse (Digital Border, Still Image).

Brighton Digital Festival is the UK’s annual programme of arts and digital events, taking place from 13 September to 13 October 2018 across the city. The CIC-run festival explores digital culture and celebrates the country’s creativity and digital talent. It also supports the local community to produce an open programme of independent events augmented by high-quality commissioned arts and education programming. At the same time, the Lumen Prize for Digital Art is a renowned global digital art competition that celebrates the very best art created with technology.
