Text by CLOT Magazine

Adriano Ferreira Borges

SEMIBREVE is the electronic music and digital art festival in Braga, Portugal. Since 2011, the festival has actively promoted the digital arts in Portugal while curating an international programme centred around inclusiveness and community.

The festival returns for its 12th edition between the 27th-30th of October, featuring a programme of performances, installations, talks and workshops designed as a journey, enabling audiences to navigate multi-disciplinary experiences successively in venues such as the UNESCO World Heritage site Bom Jesus, the grand Theatro Circo, contemporary arts space gnration, Capela Imaculada chapel and the University of Minho’s medieval saloon.

This year’s programme highlights a premiere collaboration between Félicia Atkinson + Violeta Azevedo. Alva Noto, who performed in 2011, returns in 2022 with a new presentation; KMRU, Malcolm Pardon (Roll the Dice) and Jan Jelinek will all make their debut performances at the festival.

Caterina Barbieri will return to the festival to present her new record and live show, Spirit Exit, with contributions by visual artists Marcel Weber (MFO) and Ruben Spini. Next, Duo Lea Bertucci & Ben Vida will perform Murmurations, their collaborative work based on modular synthesis and manipulated tape. Next, Maxwell Sterling will make his festival debut, presenting a unique audiovisual show in collaboration with visual artist Stephen McLaughlin, based on his recent discography, Turn of Phrase and Hollywood Medieval. And finally, the duo of François J. Bonnet and Stephen O’Malley will make their Portuguese debut and perform Cylene, one of the last few years’ most compelling pieces of music. Attendants will have a unique opportunity to attend a solo performance for electronics and organ by the Portuguese experimentalist David Maranha.

SEMIBREVE 2022 will reintroduce its club night programme with a new performance by Gábor Lázár and a Príncipe Disco label night featuring Xexa, DJ Kolt and DJ Marfox. The festival will also showcase installations, artists’ talks, workshops, the SEMIBREVE Scholar, and the SEMIBREVE Enigma Award.

SEMIBREVE runs from Octber 27 to 30, 2022. Get your tickets here.
